Access Bank Ghana has completed the sale of a 7.44% equity stake to local investors through the Ghana Stock Exchange, expanding domestic ownership of the lender while boosting liquidity in its publicly traded shares.
The transaction involved the sale of 12.1 million ordinary shares by parent company Access Bank PLC following regulatory approvals, including a no-objection from the Bank of Ghana.
Executed on July 15, the sale attracted strong demand from pension funds, institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals, underscoring continued investor confidence in Ghana’s banking sector despite a challenging macroeconomic environment over the past two years.
The disposal forms part of the bank’s broader strategy to deepen Ghanaian participation in its ownership structure while strengthening trading activity in its shares.
“This transaction reflects our continued commitment to deepening local ownership and liquidity in our shares, consistent with our strategic priorities,” Managing Director Pearl Nkrumah said in a statement. “We remain focused on converting the scale we have built into sustained value for all our stakeholders.”
The expanded shareholder base is expected to improve market liquidity while increasing participation by domestic institutional investors, particularly pension funds that have become increasingly active participants in Ghana’s capital markets.
The transaction also highlights growing confidence in listed financial institutions as Ghana’s economy continues to stabilize following debt restructuring, easing inflation and improving investor sentiment.
For the Ghana Stock Exchange, the sale represents another example of how listed companies are using public markets to broaden ownership while strengthening liquidity and encouraging greater domestic participation in corporate assets.
IC Securities acted as adviser and executing broker for the transaction.
Access Bank Ghana is a full-service commercial bank listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange and operates as part of Access Group, one of Africa’s largest banking groups with operations across the continent and international financial centres.
Access Bank Ghana’s successful 7.44% share sale expands local ownership of the lender while reinforcing investor confidence in Ghana’s banking sector. The transaction also supports broader efforts to deepen the country’s capital markets by increasing domestic participation in publicly listed companies.
