African business magnate Aliko Dangote has commended President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as a significant turnaround of Ghana’s economy within a short period.
According to Mr Dangote, the improvement in Ghana’s economic fortunes demonstrates the importance of confidence and trust in economic management.
“I want to commend President Mahama for turning around the economy of Ghana in a very short time. This has actually shown that money follows trust,” he said.
The businessman was speaking at the “Accra Reset: Full Circle – Making Global Development Work Again” event in New York on Monday, September 21 held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly
Mr Dangote said Ghana’s economic situation was challenging when President Mahama assumed office, but argued that the President’s approach to addressing the difficulties had helped restore confidence.
“It wasn’t a very good case but when he came in, he didn’t do any magic. He is not a magician, but he did the right things and people really have a lot of trust in him,” he stated.
He said the renewed confidence in the President had contributed to the turnaround in the economy.
“That is why people have trust in him and that is why Ghana’s economy turned around,” Mr Dangote added.
He subsequently congratulated President Mahama for the economic progress recorded under his administration.
“Your Excellency, I must really congratulate you,” he said.
His remarks coincide with the Mahama administration’s Resetting Ghana Agenda, which emphasizes increased investor confidence and economic stabilization.
The President has previously cited greater reserves, better fiscal performance, declining inflation, and currency appreciation as signs of the economy’s revival.
