PURC Reduces Electricity and Water Tariffs Effective April 2026

Utility users across Ghana are set to benefit from reduced electricity and water tariffs starting Wednesday, April 1, 2026, following a downward review by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The Commission announced that electricity tariffs have been reduced by 4.81%, while water charges have decreased by 3.06% for the second quarter of the year. The new rates take immediate effect as part of PURC’s routine quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism.

In a statement, the PURC explained that the review was influenced by key economic factors, including exchange rate fluctuations between the Ghana cedi and the US dollar, prevailing inflation levels, the energy generation mix, and the cost of fuel, particularly natural gas used in thermal power production.

The Commission noted that the adjustments are in line with its mandate to ensure that utility pricing reflects current economic conditions while maintaining balance across the energy and water sectors.

Additionally, the PURC introduced a new tariff structure for commercial Electric Vehicle (EV) charging services, marking the first time such pricing has been implemented in Ghana. The move is aimed at supporting the adoption of cleaner energy solutions and promoting sustainable transport.

The latest tariff review provides some relief to consumers while signaling ongoing efforts by regulators to align utility pricing with economic realities and evolving energy trends.
